Simple Past Tense : সাধারন অতীতকাল

Verb ‘to be’

Singular	Plural
আমি ছিলাম- I was	আমরা ছিলাম - We were
তুমি ছিলে - You were	তোমারা ছিলে - You were
আপনি ছিলেন -You were	আপনারা ছিলেন- You were
সে ছিল -He was	তারা ছিল - They were
সে ছিল- She was	এগুলি ছিল- These were
এটা ছিল- It was	ছাত্ররা ছিল - Students were
রাম ছিল - Ram was

 Verb ‘to be’ with complement:

তুমি সুস্থ ছিলে -You were well	তোমরা গরীব ছিলে- You were poor
তুমি ধীর ছিলে - You were cool	তোমরা তাঁতি ছিলে- You were weavers
তিনি রাজনীতিক ছিলেন- He was a politician	তারা ধনী ছিল - They were rich
তিনি পীড়িত ছিলেন - He was ill.	তারা সূখী ছিল - They were happy
বালিকাটি সত্যবাদী ছিল- The girl was truthful	জামাকাপড়গুলি অপরিস্কার ছিল - The clothes were dirty
ঘরটি অন্ধকার ছিল- The room was dark

Verb ‘to be’ with complement:

আমি কৃতকার্জ হব- I shall be successful	আমরা সতর্ক হব-We shall be careful.
আমি একজন সাংবাদিক হব-I shall be a journalist.	আমরা আইনজীবী হব-we will be lawyers
তুমি আনন্দিত হবে-you will be glad	তোমরা শিক্ষক হবে-you will be teachers.
তুমি উকিল হবে-you will be a lawyer	তোমরা খেলয়াড় হবে- you will be players.
তিনি একজন চিকিৎসক হবেন-She will be a doctor.
তারা কেরানি হবে-They will be clerks
সে অধ্যাপক হবে-He will be a professor
সতিশ ও সুমন্ত চিত্রকর হবে-satish and sumonto will be painters.

Verb: Its Time and Tenses :Part 1

Tense কথার অর্থ ক্রিয়ার কাল। ক্রিয়াটি কখন ঘটছে বা কখন ঘটেছিল বা কখন ঘটবে এই বিষয়গুলি আমরা জানতে পারি ক্রিয়ার কালের ওপর নির্ভর করে। প্রধানতঃ কাল বা Tense তিনটি ----

1. Present Tense

2. Past Tense    

3. Future Tense

ইংরেজিতে কোন বাক্য লিখতে বা বলতে গেলে প্রথমেই ঐ বাক্যের ক্রিয়ার কাল বা Tense অনুযায়ী বাক্যগঠন করতে হয়। এখানে আমরা তিনটি Tense নিয়ে ধাপে ধাপে আলোচনা করব। প্রথমে প্রতিটি Tense এর সরলরুপ ‘to be’ & ‘to have’ verb এর মাধ্যমে শেখান হবে। তারপর অন্যান্য verb দিয়ে শেখান হবে। এভাবে অনুসরন করলে ইংরেজিতে বাক্যগঠন অনেক সহজ হবে।  

Simple Present Tense:  সাধারন বর্তমানকাল

Verb ‘to be’ (হওয়া) am/is/are

Singular:

আমি হই - I am	তুমি হও - You are
আপনি হন- you are	তিনি হন - He is
সে হয়-  She is	সে হয় - He is
সে হন -  She is	এটি হয় -It is
রাম হয় -Ram is

Note: কর্তা আমি হলে বাংলা ‘হই’ ক্রিয়ার ইংরেজি ‘am’ হয়। কর্তা ‘তুমি’ বা ‘আপনি’ হলে ‘হও’ বা ‘হন’ ক্রিয়ার ইংরেজি ‘are’ হয়। কর্তা ‘তিনি’, ‘সে’, ‘ইনি’ ‘এটা’ ইত্যাদি একজনমাত্র ব্যক্তি বা এক্তিমাত্র বস্তু হলে ‘হন’, ‘হয়’, ক্রিয়ার ইংরেজি ‘is’ হয়।

Plural:

আমরা হই - We are	তোমরা হও - You are
আপনারা হন - You are	তাঁরা হন -They are
তাঁরা হয় - They are	এরা হয় - They are
মানুষেরা হয় -Men are	রাম এবং যদু হয় - Ram and Jadu are
লোকেরা হয় - Men are

Note: কর্তা বহুবচন হলে ‘হই’, ‘হও’, হন, হয়, আছি, আছ, আছে, আছেন, ক্রিয়ার ইংরেজি ‘are’ দিয়ে করতে হয়।

আমি ও আমরা ইংরেজিতে First Person, তুমি,তোমরা,আপনারা, তোরা Second Person  এবং বাকি সব Third Person . (যেমন - সে,তোরা,ওরা, রাম, রাধা, বই, খাতা, চেয়ার,টেবিল,বিড়াল,কুকুর)

Verb ‘to be’ with Complement:

Singular	Plural
আমি পীড়িত- I am ill	আমরা দূর্বল - We are weak
তুমি অলস - You are lazy	তোমরা নিষ্ঠুর - You are cruel
আপনি দয়ালু - You are kind	আপনারা মহৎ - You are great
তিনি পরিশ্রমী- He is dilligent	তাঁরা দরিদ্র - They are poor
তিনি বুদ্ধিমতি - She is intelligent	এরা দুষ্ট - They are naughty
সে অসুস্থ - He is unwell	আঙুরগুলি টক -The grapes are sour
এটি মৃত - It is dead

ওপরের দৃষ্টান্তগুলিতে বাক্যের শেষে ill, weak, lazy Adjective ব্যবহার করে বাক্যের অর্থ সম্পুর্ন করা হয়েছে। এই Adjective গুলি না থাকলে বাক্যের অর্থ সম্পুর্ন হত না। তাই এগুলিকে Complement বলে।

সে অমনোযোগী। মেয়েটি সুন্দরী। তারা দূর্বল। আমি অলস। তোমরা সৎ। আমি সবল। ঘোড়াগুলি সাদা। বাঘ হিংস্র। গাধাটি মৃত। লোকটি ধনী।

B. Fill in the blanks with am,is,are, :

Raju : oh really ! How did it happen?

I : I was going to school, suddenly I found that my cycle’s tyre got punctured. Please repair the puncture quickly or I will be late for the school.

Raju : ok. Just give me 5 minutes. I will repair that in time.

I : ok. How much do I have to pay?

Raju : 10 rupees.

I: ok. Please repair. I will pay that.

12. Write a story (within 100 words) using the given hints. Give a title to the story.

Crow sitting on a tree ---- piece of meat on its beak ----- fox passing under the tree --- wants the meat --- asks the crow to sing --- crow keeps under its feet and sings ----- fooled, fox leaves.

                                       Fox Gets Fooled

One day in a forest, there was a crow sitting on a branch of a tree beside the river.  The crow had collected a piece of meat in its beak from somewhere. It got tired so it was resting for a moment on the tree. Meanwhile, a fox was passing under the tree. He saw the crow sitting on the branch. Seeing the piece of meat in the crow’s beak, a tricky idea came to his mind. The fox thought that he was very clever and could fool the crow. So, he said to the crow that it had a very beautiful voice and requested the crow to sing a song for him. But the crow was cleverer that the fox. It understood the trick of the fox at once. The crow kept the meat under its feet and began to sing. The fox got fooled and left the place with a broken heart.
